This grant has provided me with the opportunity to give my student the chance to learn critical independent living skills that they will need in adulthood in the form of a mock apartment. It created a living room, where they can learn household maintenance, how to have appropriate leisure time, a space to relax and unwind, and a space to socialize. The dining room has given the chance for them to learn how to set and clear off a table, eat meals in a common space, and how to serve a meal. The bedroom has provided them with learning how to put their laundry away, make a bed, and organize a dresser. In the coming years, I hope the space can grow and develop into a true transition space which students from other classrooms can utilize and gain these skills.
